Challenge: R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril (R.I.P. XIII)

Inspired by several bloggers I follow, I will be participating for the first time in the event R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril (R.I.P. XIII Challenge), which is in its 13th year, and is hosted by Capricious Reader. The challenge starts on September 1st and will run until October 31st.

The purpose of the R.I.P. Challenge is to enjoy books that could be classified as:

·       Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror, or Supernatural

The goals are simple: have fun and share the fun.

There are multiple levels of participation (Perils). I will take part in two:
Peril the Second
Read two books of any length that you believe fit within the challenge categories.

My two contenders are:
Bellewether                                                     The Silent Companions
by Susanna Kearsley                                      by Laura Purcell

Peril on the Screen
This is for those who like to watch suitably scary, eerie, mysterious Gothic fare this time of year. It may be something on the small screen or large. It may be a television show or your favorite film.
There is plenty to choose from. Let’s see what I come up with.

  1. Both of these sound like great choices for the RIP 13. Hope you enjoy them.

    1. Thanks, Diane. I'm about to finish Bellewether by the end of this week. I'll be posting my thoughts then. For the Peril on the Screen I've been thinking that I could watch Sherlock Holmes (the latest 2 films plus the TV series).

  2. The Silent Companions looks intriguing. Happy reading Carmen!

    2. These novels look good Carmen. Many Perils on Screen, right? I'm not too good with scary films but which ones are you thinking of? That movie Hereditary looks too scary for me. Hmm

    3. I'll be watching Hereditary anyways. It'd be a good idea to include it in a post for the challenge. I'm thinking maybe both Sherlock Holmes films, at least Season 1 of the TV series Sherlock, Mimic directed by Guillermo Del Toro (I am a big fan), and perhaps another film by the creative duo that I have a big crush on as of late, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's Resolution. Both Mimic and Resolution are dark sci-fi, horror, genre bending movies. That's what I have in mind at this point. We'll see. ;-)

  5. Carmen, I am so pleased to see you will be joining in this year. I also look forward to your thoughts on Bellewether, as I have a copy of that which I am really looking forward to. Happy R.I.P reading and watching!

    1. Thanks, Jessica. :-) I saw your post announcing the challenge, as well as Helen's and Diane's, and I went to check out the page. I told myself "Why not?!" So I decided to participate in two perils, as they fit both of my interests. I'm already planning posts, especially for the 'Peril on the Screen'. ;-)

  6. Excellent - I always used to take part in this challenge and loved it - and in fact I have both these books so I should really try and join in.

    1. You should. I bet with that book competition you are juggling right at this moment more than a few books would qualify for this challenge. :-)
